I AM REFUGEE:
I AM REFUGEE is a campaign started by our founder; one that began as a response to the ongoing Syrian and Iraqi refugee crisis occurring throughout both the Middle East and Europe. Our team had the opportunity to visit fleeing refugees as they escaped to seek asylum in Europe in the pennecal of the ISIS attacks against them. It was these personal, raw experiences that catalyzed the need to give these refugees the opportunity to tell their stories.
Refugees have fled bullets, bombs, and torture in war-torn countries in the Middle East. Conflict has continued to escelate to unprescedented and unimaginable numbers. The Syrian civil war is arguably the worst humanitarian crisis since the second world war, with over a million people killed, roughly the same number wounded or missing, and 1/2 of Syria's 22 million population displaced from their homes.
Men, women and children have undergone unspeakable tragedy and transition as they left their native land to seek asylum in neighboring countries. We believe that these people each have a story, one that needs to be told.
In response, in 2016, Illuminate Nations sent a small team of videographers and photographers on a three-month journey across six countries and three continents to sit with refugees right where they were and offer them the opportunity to share their story with the world. Moreover, we partnered with Samaritan's Purse and local workers on the ground in some of the most troubled regions to provide food, medical supplies, and basic necessities.
Now with over 30 hours of footage, our team is currently working stateside with former refugees to translate these heart-gripping testimonies of loss, trauma, and the journey into a new life. We are working feverishly to complete the translations of the stories, produce and edit a documentary series, and complete written journals entailing these stories - with the eventual goal of touring America premiering them.
I AM REFUGEE is multifaceted in it's approach, but simple in it's goal: to reestablish the dignity of refugees by making their story known, meting their needs, and conveying the Father's heart in love.
